New materials on this version

One of my favorite patterns is the Tan CDC Caddis.  It is simple to tie and it catches fish like no other pattern.  I began using this fly in the summer of 2004 when I journeyed to Montana with Family Tyes.   I had great results with this fly on most of the rivers I fished.   My most memorable moment with the fly was at Bear Trap Canyon along the Madison River below Ennis, Montana.   There were tan Caddis everywhere, and trout were rising in every run and pool along the river.  I instantly tied on the Tan CDC Caddis with a Caddis Emerger dropper tied directly of the CDC Caddis.  This is my favorite combination when there is a hatch of caddis flies on the water.  I am a novice at the art of fly fishing, but that evening I caught nearly 20 trout and missed a few more.   It was the most fish I caught during the entire trip.  I was using a size 14 hook at the time but the size and color of the fly varies depends on the caddis in your area.

Materials:

Thread:           Tan to match the body color

            Wing:              Natural CDC

            Underwing:     Plastic Canvas Yarn- Camel

            Body:              Super Fine Tan Dubbing

Tying Instructions:

1.      Stare by securing the thread up near the eye of the hook and wrap back to the bend of the hook.

2.      Apply dub to the thread and wrap toward the eye stopping at the 2/3 point.  Do not crowd the eye.

3.      Tie in the plastic canvas yarn at this point.

4.      Then tie in two good CDC feathers over the yarn.  Two CDC puffs might be enough.

5.      Whip finish to complete the fly

The Tan CDC Caddis has found a permanent place in my fly box, and is now one of favorite dry flies.  Its color and size can vary to match the Caddis in your area.  It is a versatile fly that you can use during anytime of the day.  It is easy to fish and floats well, even in rough water.  If it starts to sink just make a few false casts and you are back in business.  I hope to use this pattern again soon.

Note from Chuck McKinney:  I am sure this last line is intended for Jim Reynolds, his Family Tyes New Jersey Director.
